How to Become an Ice Hockey Official
Step 1: Register as an on-ice official with USA Hockey
- Register online at USA Hockey.com (This link will take you to the first page of USA Hockey ice officials registration. Please note that you must be 18 years of age to participate in on-line registration. If you are under 18 years of age, have your parents complete the registration online for you). You will need to pay the Official's Registration Fee and $20 Education and Training Fee. These fees are in addition to any registration fees that you might have paid as a player.
Step 2: Rule Book and Open Book Test
- USA Hockey will send you a USA Hockey rulebook and casebook. Read through it.
- Once you have read through the Rulebook, complete the open-book test. This can be taken prior to or after attending a seminar. The open-book test is online and easy to complete.
Step 3: Register and attend a USA Hockey sponsored Official's Development Seminar
- Register for and attend a Level 1 Officials Development Seminar (see Seminar Information page). All new officials must attend a Level 1 seminar and must remain as a level 1 for their first season. Officials are permitted to advance 1 level for every year that they are an official.
Step 4: Your registration is complete!!!
- Once you have successfully completed each of these steps, USA Hockey will send you an Official's card and crest in the mail. Both the card and crest are required to officiate USA Hockey sanctioned hockey games.
- Once you receive your card and crest you will need to contact your local officiating scheduler to obtain game assignments. (this information is reviewed at the seminar)
Step 5: Purchase Equipment
- If needed you will need to purchase referee equipment. The Referee's Closet has partnered with us to be the Preferred Equipment Provider for Arizona officials. During the seminar you will receive instructions on how to receive 10% off your order at www.refcloset.com
